      The code that is executed when DBG_SCALARFIELD is defined is just for
      debuging. Therefore adding an option that can be chosen in the input
      file doesn't seem to be justified. Instead I reduced the code that is
      hidden when commenting out the definition of DBG_SCALARFIELD.
