Sorry, for some reason I don't remember I don't compile with the tests enabled. Shouldn't we make them mandatory (or at least opt-out instead of opt-in)?

No problem. The problem is that the unit tests need the additional gtest library. For users this will make compiling more difficult.

I don't think that someone that wants to develop code will lose hart when having to compile an additional library. Additionally gtest is easy to compile and both Achim and Chris have written scripts to help with compilation.

Agreed on developers, I was more thinking about advanced users who want to use the most recent master version. Of course they can easily disable the unit testing. So then why not indeed.
